The mid-season finale of the first season, The Bridge introduces us to another thing SHIELD does often, and well: Cliffhangers. We get the return of Mike Peterson, Raina, and the Centipede group, and a reveal that the eye implants from Eye Spy are in use, and created, by the Centipede Group.
The team start by discovering one Edison Po has been busted out of jail by a bunch of men with Centipede implants, and enlist the help of Mike to defeat them. After Raina recognises Mike through a soldiers eye implant, she kidnaps his son and threatens to kill him unless SHIELD hand over Coulson, at the Clairvoyant’s request. Of course, the deal being for Coulson and not Mike himself is a twist, and a well done one.
The episode, and the series for 10 weeks, ends with Coulson being dragged off by the Centipede group, Mike Peterson seemingly perishing in an explosion, Ward being shot at by a helicopter, and the rest of the team scrambling to figure what the hell went wrong.
The team is fragmented, Skye is left feeling disillusioned with May refusing (rudely) to help her with the search for her parents. May herself seems to be developing some feelings for Ward, Ward is (presumably) left in the position (if he’s not severely injured) of leadership with Coulson’s kidnapping and FitzSimmons… well they probably feel like they couldn’t have done anything to help.
I love SHIELD, and this episode is commonly the point where I tell people the show goes from okay to incredible. The second half of season one is brilliant and severely memorable, and I can’t wait to get back into it again.
